Smiths Falls Civitan Club History 




Founder Member Sam Wilson


1969 - 1970 Founder Member Sam Wilson became the first Smiths Falls Civitan member to become Governor of Civitan Canadian District East.

 



The Smiths Falls Civitan Club has bought a microscope for the Chambers Memorial Hospital with the funds raised by selling fruit cakes.  Dr, Tom O. Ashwell right, shows Sam Wilson, president of the club, the microscope and the fruit cake that made it possible.  The Civitan Club is now helping to form the Lanark Country Association for the Mentally Retarded.  The Association hopes to have a Day School to serve the area.

In Memory of Civitan Sam Wilson...

  Sam became a charter member of the Pembroke Civitan Club in June 1957, and later served the club as Treasurer and Vice-President before becoming President. He served the Pembroke club as President for two & a half terms.  During this period the club was instrumental in the formation of the Pembroke & District Association for Retarded Children.

In 1964 Sam became the Charter Vice-President of the Smiths Falls Civitan Club, subsequently becoming President.  He served in this capacity for two terms. Sam served a two year term (1966 to 1968) as Lt. Governor for Canadian District East then moved onto Governor-Elect and Governor.  Fast-forwarding to 1981-1983, Sam again held the position of President for the Smiths Falls Civitan Club.  Over the coarse of time, Sam continued as an active member with Smiths Falls Civitan Club, heading up many projects.  If it wasn't for his dedication to the scrap-booking project, this history page would be all but blank.  Sam G. Wilson combined total of years in Civitan was 51.

June 19, 1965 the Perth Civitan Club was chartered by the Smiths Falls Civitan Club.

In 1967 Donald Stanzel was elected as club president, a position he held for two years.

April 24, 1969 saw the sod turning ceremony for the new Smiths Falls Civitan building located off highway 15 on the northern limits of the town.

April 29, 1973 the  Kingston and District Civitan Club was chartered by the Smiths Falls Civitan Club.

April 16, 1988 the greater Petawawa and District Civitan Club was chartered by the Smiths Falls Civitan Club.

On March 17, 1917 Civitan was formed in Birmingham, Alabama by a group of business men.  Civitan International was formed with the chartering of the first club in Canada.
On the first anniversary on the Smiths Falls' club, an election of officers was held, and Sam Wilson was elected as the president by acclamation.  During this meeting, three new member were initiated.
On April of 1920 in Toronto, Dr. Courtney W. Shopshire was the founder of this branch, and the first president of Civitan International.

On April 4, 1964 the Smiths Falls Civitan Club was chartered by the Capital Civitan Club of Ottawa. This took place at the Smiths Falls Golf and Country Club and was started with 25 members.  The first president was James H. O'Neal who was later replaced by Sam Wilson to finish out his term. The charter was presented by Gordon Bates, Governor of the Canadian District.  One month after the club was chartered; Donald Stanzel was initiated as a new member.  At this time the meets were being held at Wong's Grill on William Street in Smiths Falls.  By this time, the membership had increased to 36.








The Civitan Club of Smiths Falls presented the St. Francis General Hospital in Smiths Falls with a whirlpool bath.  The new type of bath will be used by patients which require low back, hip and leg treatments.
